Fish Killing Machine!

Ever wonder why Great Blue Herons are such wonderful fishermen? This picture helps explain. Their enormous eyes are perfectly positioned on  their heads in order to see prey in the water immediately beneath them, frogs, fish, and other prey. The long pointed bill often acts like a spear, as they actually snare their prey by harpooning them. This one landed in a tree right in front of me, mere feet away. Here, I am standing directly beneath him.

Flight #02-Niner Cleared For Landing

Great Blue Heron unexpectedly swoops in for a landing only feet in front of me during a stroll down a boardwalk nature walk. What was truly remarkable is that I was completely alone, not another soul in sight. I am quite certain the bird had to have seen me but decided he’d land anyway. Thanks, Mr. Heron!
