Fish Killing Machine!

Ever wonder why Great Blue Herons are such wonderful fishermen? This picture helps explain. Their enormous eyes are perfectly positioned on  their heads in order to see prey in the water immediately beneath them, frogs, fish, and other prey. The long pointed bill often acts like a spear, as they actually snare their prey by harpooning them. This one landed in a tree right in front of me, mere feet away. Here, I am standing directly beneath him.

Not to mention their spine is curved to allow for a powerful strike. The photo was excellent, the perspective is almost comical! 🙂
